A fresh grip can make the difference between feeling in control of your paddle or battling slippery hands mid-rally. Whether you’re stepping onto court for your first tournament or just playing a casual game, knowing how to re-grip your paddle is an essential skill.
In this first episode of JOOLA Australia’s Game Ready series, Melbourne-based JOOLA Pro Coach and athlete Daniel Kouznetsov walks through how to apply an overgrip in four simple steps. These quick adjustments can give your paddle a brand-new feel without replacing the original grip - keeping you confident, comfortable, and tournament ready.
Why It Matters
- Better control: A fresh over grip helps reduce slipping and improves your hold on the paddle.
- Comfort for long matches: Layers add cushioning, reducing fatigue during extended play.
- Extended paddle life: Protects your original grip from sweat, wear, and tear.
- Easy to replace: Over grips are inexpensive and simple to swap out before events.
Many players wait until their grip is falling apart to replace it but pros like Daniel know that fresh grips can give you the edge in tight matches.
Step-by-Step Breakdown
-
Step 1: Remove the rubber band
Take off the rubber band at the top of the handle and set it aside - you’ll reuse it later. -
Step 2: Peel the plastic film
Unwrap your over grip. Peel away the clear plastic film to reveal the tacky outer surface. The inside has a strip of double-sided tape to help it stick. -
Step 3: Start at the butt cap
Stick the rough edge end of the grip at the base of the handle and wrap once around. From here, continue winding upward, overlapping slightly (about half a centimeter) with each turn. -
Step 4: Secure the finish
When you reach the top, use grip tape to secure the end. Replace the rubber band to lock everything in place.

FAQs
How often should I change my pickleball paddle grip?
Frequent players should re-grip every few weeks, while casual players may only need to replace grips every couple of months. Once the grips starts to change colour or lose the toughness of the surface its recommended to change it.
What’s the difference between an overgrip and a replacement grip?
An overgrip is applied over your existing grip for extra tackiness and comfort. A replacement grip fully replaces the base grip on your paddle. An overgrip is a great option to place on your paddle from the start to keep the existing grip clean and tacky.
Do I need to remove the original grip before adding an overgrip?
No - you simply wrap the overgrip on top of the existing grip.
